menopause & weight gain
Perimenopausal weight gain. Not a well-known topic of conversation at dinner parties, but known (or suspected) by many women that have passed through perimenopause and put on weight:
- As we approach menopause our metabolism tends to slow down and our need for food (energy) is reduced.
- What typically happens during perimenopause is weight gain due to factors such as comfort or emotional eating. This is known as "perimenopausal weight gain" (quite a mouthful).
Perimenopause causes major changes to moods, anxiety levels increase, we may feel bloated and don’t feel good about ourselves – so we eat.
Treating the symptoms of perimenopausal weight gain can stop overeating, emotional eating and many of the other effects of 'the change'.
